As expressed in the Cathedral High School Mission Statement, the school "exists to help young men to develop their spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, physical, and cultural gifts in the LaSallian tradition of Catholic education. Central to this aim is the active concern of the school to promote student health and physical fitness, together with those values which are conducive to their maintenance. The Physical Education Department is the chief instrument of the school in serving these aims.
The challenge to the physical education program is to help each student develop those understandings, values, and skills which will contribute to overall physical fitness. It seeks to accomplish this through a range of activities which contribute to greater physical strength, endurance, skills, and accuracy. At the same time, students are involved in learning the procedures and rules of various athletic activities, and of coming to recognize those attitudes which are essential to effective interpersonal relationships.
The health education program seeks to provide students with the insights and attitudes which will promote their physical, emotional, social, and moral development. Through acquainting students with good health practices and with practices and occasions which are hazardous to health, students are provided the essential knowledge upon which they can make good decisions relative to personal health.
A major commitment of the Physical Education Department is to educate students for the effective and productive use of leisure time. It approaches this responsibility through incorporating a wide range of individual sports and activities within the required program.
The entire program is designed to help each student, regardless of the existing level of physical capability, to maximize his/her own potential. Therefore, the physical education and health program attempts to help each student experience a sense of actual achievement, thus contributing to a healthier self-concept and to a greater readiness to tackle the various challenges which will continue to confront the young person in contemporary society. |
