Israel Franco ’03

I graduated from Cathedral in 2003, during my time in Cathedral I was part of the track and cross country teams and also took several AP and Dual Credit Courses. Cathedral offered a great variety of classes during my junior and senior year; thanks to the Accounting class I took at Cathedral I found what major I wanted to pursue.

Growing up I was in a private Catholic school in Mexico and my parents worked hard to keep me in private school through elementary school and Junior High as we moved to the U.S. My mother, aunt, and grandmother were all graduates from Loretto High School and always valued the strong relationships and morals that were formed during those years.

What I miss the most from being a student in Cathedral is having the pleasure of spending time with my Cathedral brothers; I remember breakfast in our cars early in the mornings, playing basketball in the old gym, and organizing weekend activities in between classes. I am thankful that those relationships have held strong over the years and really enjoy visiting with my friends whenever we are back in El Paso.

After graduating from Cathedral I attended the University of Texas at El Paso and completed my BBA with a double major in Accounting and Finance in 2008. During my time at UTEP I had several jobs (including HVAC construction in a town of population 700 with my fellow 2003 classmate Jose Toscano) but really took the most benefit from working at a local CPA firm and doing an internship with the United States Agency of International Development in Washington D.C.

Post-graduation I joined Dell as part of the inaugural class of its’ Finance Development Program, which consisted of four different six-month rotational assignments and significant academic focus to build solid finance and business skills. The highlight of the program was when me and my wife spent the last of those rotations in Bratislava, Slovakia doing a six month assignment supporting the European Finance organization. After completing this program I spent four years in the internal audit group getting the opportunity to travel to China, Malaysia, Mexico, Panama, India, and many cities within the US. Currently I am a finance project manager at Dell helping implement new tools and processes for the sales organizations.

In line with the call to serve others learned from my time at Cathedral, I recently completed the Hispanic Austin Leadership (HAL) program as part of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce – this is a nine month program comprised of sessions to raise awareness on challenges facing the greater Austin area and also includes a Community Impact Project to help address those challenges. Our project focused on establishing a network of professional mentors for college students or those who have recently graduated.

“What are you proudest of?”
When we got married, my wife had to stop her studies in Mexico as we moved to Austin. I was extremely proud of being able to support her as she completed her BBA in Marketing from Texas State University.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
The importance of a good work ethic and humbleness.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Start thinking about your future NOW and utilize the great opportunities Cathedral can offer to pave the way to getting there.
