Esteban Carrasco ’02

The decision to attend CHS ultimately came from me (much to my parents’ surprise/relief/excitement)! Until that point, I’d never attended a private parochial (much less all male) school. I had my reservations, but I figured I’d try something completely different. In 7th and 8th grade, I had had some trouble fitting in with all the cliques that were starting to form at school and kind of fell in with the wrong crowd. Looking back now more than 10 years later, making the decision to attend CHS was absolutely one of the best ways I helped my younger self out.

Cathedral High School offered me the chance to become part of something larger than myself in a very meaningful and life defining way. I wasn’t made to conform or fit into a mold as much as I was encouraged to improve and reflect on who I was already starting to become as a young man. I can’t say that I really miss anything about Cathedral because I’ve taken so many of the experiences and lessons I learned there with me into my adult life. Honest to God, attending CHS is an experience – not just four years of high school.

I was accepted into and attended Loyola University Chicago where I began my undergraduate studies. In 2008, I graduated from UTEP with a degree in Graphic Design & General Business. I’m a DJ and Music Producer living in and working based out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Some of the venues I play at regularly are Encore Beach Club, XS, and Surrender. I also travel frequently and perform regularly at events like the BPM Festival which recently took place in Playa Del Carmen.

In my own experience, pursuing a rewarding career in the entertainment industry requires a lot of faith in God, tenacity, resourcefulness, and self-reliance. There is virtually no rule book to follow in order to “make it” in this field, so if anything, the core values which were instilled and developed in me during my time at CHS have played a critical role in my successes and have helped me get through some of the curve balls my career path has placed in front of me.

“What are you proudest of?”
Over time, I feel that I’ve begun to learn the importance of gratitude. Trust me, this is an ongoing assignment. Gratitude is not a material or quantifiable achievement, but without it, I know I probably would have looked over many of the opportunities God has blessed me with in my life.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
Life can be more rewarding when you step outside of your comfort zone.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Show up on time, life isn’t going to wait around for you to get out of bed.
