Carlos Escarcega ’07

I have the privilege to be part of Class of 2007. I attended Cathedral High School primarily for its high level in swimming and academics. I started in Cathedral as a sophomore and swam my three years under the guidance of the great Coach White. In my senior year I had the honor of being named swimmer of the year in Texas at the State Championships, which took place at the University of Texas at Austin.

One of the things I miss the most from Cathedral is the sense of brotherhood with my fellow classmates. There were no different groups separated by popularity, social status, race; it was just an enormous group of friends that had becomes brothers by their senior year. And the swim team trips to Regionals, State and Nationals were always a memorable experience.

After graduating from Cathedral I attended the University of Arizona and swam there for three and a half years. Then I came back to UTEP and finished my Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering in 2012. In 2014 I graduated with my Master’s Degree on Civil and Environmental Engineering. Since 2015 I have been working at the El Paso Water Utilities in the Engineering Design Department, but I will be moving next month to Washington DC to work with the Department of Defense focusing on projects of fire protection, renewable energy, sustainable engineering design and gas extraction. During my time at Cathedral I learned that I can reach my goals by working hard, and that is what I have been doing ever since.

 “What are you proudest of?”
I feel very proud and fortunate to have had the opportunity to be part of the legacy that Cathedral High School represents in El Paso community.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
The greatest lesson I carry on with me everywhere I go and in everything I do is the deep meaning of a phrase we used to say at the beginning of every class, “God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good”.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Enjoy your time in Cathedral and work hard, but mainly cherish the moments with your classmates, which eventually will become your brothers, “Viva la Cate!”
