Ruben De Alba ’04

I graduated from La Cate as part of the class of 2004. Throughout my time at Cathedral I was involved in a lot of different things that included things like Speech and Debate, JV & Varsity Baseball, manager of the Varsity Basketball team, and choir to name a few.

I attended private school most of my life growing up so attending Cathedral was a no-brainer for my parents and I, which turned out to be one of the best decisions we could have made. My time at Cathedral was filled with great memories and more importantly, great friends. The thing that I cherished most and miss most about my time at La Cate was that sense of brotherhood and pride in each other’s success.
My parents and I knew that Cathedral would provide the best opportunities for me to grow as a young, Catholic man not only in my faith but also in my academic preparedness. Cathedral would be the best option to help build the foundation to prepare me for college and life after school, whether that was in El Paso or not.

As it turned out, I would attend Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. I graduated from Duke University in May 2008 with my Bachelor’s in Science in both Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. I am currently working as an engineer for Acelity in San Antonio, TX where we develop medical devices that have revolutionized the way in which caregivers treat a variety of wound types.

My time at Cathedral helped me develop a stronger foundation in my faith, taught me how to be a leader, and taught me to work hard.

“What are you proudest of?”
The company I work for makes medical devices that help in healing difficult wounds. I am proud that I am able to make an impact and help restore some of our patient’s lives. I would not be in this position without my foundation that Cathedral was so instrumental in building.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
There were many lessons that I learned from my time at Cathedral. But I think the one that sticks with me the most is to be tolerant towards others and their beliefs even if they aren’t in line with yours.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Cherish your time at Cathedral. It is truly a special institution. You will learn so much, both from your teachers in class and your experiences throughout your time at La Cate. You will also gain brothers for life that you might go months or years without speaking to each other, but when you do reconnect it’s like talking to family. It really is something incredible. Enjoy it!
