Octavio Corral ’03

I graduated from Cathedral in 2003. The decision to attend Cathedral came about after my father asked me if I would like to attend a public high school. While I had many friends who were going on to Cathedral after middle school, the main reason I chose Cathedral over a public school was because of the class size. I was worried I would just be another number at a public school. I wanted a high school experience where I could bond with my classmates and teachers.

My most cherished moment at Cathedral was when my English teacher allowed us to turn in a home movie as my final project. I got to produce and direct a rendition of the Old English classic Beowulf, starring all of my classmates. The brotherhood and memories we shared while making the movie will never be forgotten.

After Cathedral, I attended UTEP for one year and then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where I graduated with a BS in Radio-Television-Film in 2007. Attending UTEP for one year turned out to be much more beneficial than I expected. During my time at Cathedral, I participated in a few AP and dual-credit classes where I received college-level credit. Unlike other universities, UTEP accepted all of my classes and I was able to start college with almost 40 hours of credit.

Today, my brother and I are the owners of our own online marketing company that specializes in website development and video production in El Paso. We currently service local clients such as the Foundation for the Diocese of El Paso, the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence, and the Humane Society of El Paso.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am proudest of the self-respect I came to discover while being at Cathedral. During my time there, I always felt the teachers and the community just expected you to be a man of dignity and honor.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
Cathedral taught me that in order to build something great, you need lean on those around you; that the positive energy and momentum of a group is a powerful force on its own. Even today I feel as if there is nothing the Cathedral brotherhood can’t accomplish.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
When you want to try something different in school, just ask! you’d be surprised how receptive your teachers are to you experimenting with something new that will help you learn and grow.
