My family moved to El Paso following my sophomore year of high school. My parents’ decision to send my younger brother (Michael Sauter ’13) and I to Cathedral changed our lives forever. My parents believed that Cathedral provided the best opportunity to grow academically, athletically, and spiritually. They were right.
During my years at Cathedral, I participated in Football, Basketball, and Track. There is no doubt that the Cathedral brotherhood was the most rewarding part of my time at Cathedral.
Following Cathedral Graduation, I attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 2015, I graduated from West Point with a B.S. in Economics. I currently reside in Fort Bragg, North Carolina where I serve as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. At Cathedral, I learned the value of selfless service, a moral foundation, and a strong work ethic. The lessons I learned at Cathedral have proven to be invaluable over the course of my academic and military career.
“What are you proudest of?”
I’m most proud of my family’s commitment to military service. My father served in the Army for more than 26 years (while my mother raised four boys) and my brother Michael attends the US Air Force Academy.
“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
On my first day at Cathedral I realized that as a non-Hispanic student I was the minority at my new school. By the second day of class, I realized the language I spoke, where I lived, and the color of my skin did not matter. Every student at Cathedral treated me as a friend and brother. Cathedral taught me that deep down we are all the same and we must treat everyone as equal, regardless of nationality, race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.
“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
At the end of every day, reflect on what you did today to make this world a better place. Each day, we must strive to better both ourselves and the world we live in. There are thousands of different ways to serve others in our communities. Choose the path of service that best fits your passion and talents.
