Appraise the argument that the Framers of the Constitution were men of great wealth and power, professionals and property-owners who had a vested interest in limiting democratic rights. 6. Describe the controversies and compromises that emerged in the writing and ratification of the Constitution. 7. Explain that relatively few Americans were actually involved in determining whether the Constitution would be accepted or rejected. 8. Explain that America has a federal system and a government based on the principles of separation of powers, checks and balances, and judicial review. 9. Discuss the major powers and responsibilities of the three branches of government under the Constitution. 10. Summarize how, in its early years, the United States went through "growing pains" similar to those of the new nations of contemporary Asia and Africa.
