After reading Chapter 4, the Cathedral student should be able to:
    1. Describe the pivotal role of the Supreme Court in interpreting the Bill of Rights and defining the scope of individual freedom.

    2. Discuss the protections and limits of free speech under the First Amendment.

    3. Discuss how the Supreme Court attempts to balance First Amendment rights against the competing needs to preserve order and preserve the state.

    4. Describe how the First Amendment, as interpreted by the Supreme Court, both protects and limits freedom of the press.

    5. Describe the development in the twentieth century of the legal "right to privacy" through Supreme Court decisions and federal legislation.

    6. Examine the continuing political and legal debates over the proper relationship between church and state.

    7. Discuss the protections of the Fourth Amendment against "unreasonable searches and seizures," the importance of the "exclusionary rule," and the "good faith" exception to the rule.

    8. Compare and contrast the decisions of the Warren Court and the Burger and Rehnquist Courts in dealing with the rights of the accused and the procedural safeguards of due process.

    9. Explain how, through the gradual process of selective incorporation, the Supreme Court has brought the states almost entirely under the protective umbrella of the Bill of Rights.

    10. Analyze the changes in American immigration policy during the twentieth century.
