    Upon completion of Chapter 6, the Cathedral student should should be able to:

    1. Define public opinion and assess its importance in the American political system.

    2. Discuss the role of the family in political socialization.

    3. Explain the importance of political polls in the American electoral process.

    4. Describe the impact of violence and political assassination on the American political system.

    5. Discuss how political leaders often attempt to "manage" public opinion or to manipulate it in their favor.

    6. Compare and contrast the "power elite" and the "pluralist' views of American society.

    7. Describe the use of money as a tool by lobbyists working for interest groups.

    8. Discuss the rise of single-issue groups and the growing importance of political action committees.

    9. Define interest groups and identify the functions performed by interest groups in the American political system.

    10. Explain how interest group politics may not work to the advantage of the poor and minorities, who often do not have teams of lobbyists to represent them.
