Modern Language Association (MLA)

The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (4th ed) recommends a parenthetical documentation system. This means that instead of the more traditional footnotes, the writer uses references, placed within parentheses in the text, to point to sources in an alphabetized list of works cited that appears at the end of the paper. Notes numbered consecutively throughout the text are still used for explanation or comment that the paper itself cannot accommodate.
