APPENDIX E

CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL

FACULTY & STAFF INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

The Internet and e-mail provides invaluable resources and communications to the faculty and staff of Cathedral High School.  Faculty and staff members accessing the Internet on computer systems provided by Cathedral High School, or accessing and using their assigned cathedral-elpaso.org Irish WebMail account, are representing Cathedral High School and therefore have a responsibility to use the Internet and their school e-mail in a productive manner that meets the ethical and moral standards of our educational institution.  Our goal is to provide Internet and e-mail access to facilitate resource sharing, innovation, and communication as a tool to promote educational excellence. As a condition of using Cathedral’s telecommunications equipment, as well as the use of a school assigned e-mail account, I understand that access to telecommunication networks (e.g., e-mail, the internet) is a privilege, and agree to the following Acceptable Use Policy:

1)   The use of the Internet must be in support of education and research and consistent with educational standards and objectives of Cathedral High School and the Diocese of El Paso.

2)   Transmission or storage of any material in violation of any law of the United States or of the State of Texas is unauthorized. This includes copyrighted material, threatening, offensive, obscene, or otherwise intended to harass or demean recipients must not be transmitted.

3)   E-mail communications should be used for professional reasons and utilized in an ethical and lawful manner.  As in all business environments, there is no legal expectation of privacy when communicating over the Cathedral High School network via the Internet or e-mail.

4)   POP server e-mail accounts such as Yahoo, AOL and Hotmail are acceptable e-mail accounts.  Use of all POP server e-mail accounts are to be in compliance with all pertinent provisions of this Internet Acceptable Use Policy.

6)   E- mail communications should not be used for the boycotting of businesses, political campaigns, or chain letters of any kind.

7)   No global e-mail, originating from within the confines of Cathedral High School is to be forwarded without the prior consent of the Principal or his designated representative.

8)   Anonymous communications are strictly prohibited.

9)   Messages must be deleted regularly to conserve space. File or delete your sent items folder and empty the deleted items folder on a weekly basis. If you receive large files, delete them from email after you have saved and confirmed that the files have been saved.

10) Private, commercial or illegal use is prohibited. This prohibition extends to the use of the Internet or other electronic media equipment to access, store, or display pornographic or other offensive material.

11) Programs that infiltrate computing system and/or damage software components are prohibited.

12) Files, data, or information of others must not be improperly accessed or misused.

13) User accounts must not be shared or left open and unattended.

14) Backup copies and transfer of data between computers of documents and files are the responsibility of the user.

15) Security violations must be reported to the Principal or his designated representative immediately upon detection.

 16) Personal information must be given out only in an instructional context or in the performance of Cathedral High School business.

18) Any downloaded material must be in support of education and research and consistent with educational standards and objectives of Cathedral High School and the Diocese of El Paso.  To prevent viruses to the equipment, prior to downloading, be certain the antivirus software has been updated with the latest files. Download only software of which you have a legal right to download.

19) The downloading of music for non-instructional purposes is strictly forbidden.

19) Malicious attempts to harm or destroy hardware, software, or data are prohibited.

20) Any action, which violates existing Board policy or public law, is prohibited.

Cathedral High School has taken reasonable measures to prevent obscene and controversial materials from appearing on our network, but cannot completely control access to all inappropriate materials. Cathedral High School firmly believes that the valuable information, interaction and communication available on this worldwide network far out weighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the school system.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I have read and agree to comply with the Cathedral High School Internet Acceptable Use Policy. I understand that any violations of these regulations are unethical, potentially illegal, and may constitute a criminal offense. If I commit any violation, my access privileges may be revoked and disciplinary action may be taken up to and including termination of employment. As a Cathedral High School employee, I acknowledge that my acceptance of this Internet Acceptable Use Policy is implied by my use of Cathedral High School’s equipment or of its transmission lines.
