Irish Strong – Cathedral Athletics

2016 - 2017

Carlos Puertas – Athletic Director     Hampton Hurt – Asst. Athletic Director

The Fighting Irish Baseball team has been quietly turning into a playoff contender. Sporting a 9 and 5 record, we have defeated powerhouse teams Bel Air, Cobre and Clint. Coach Puertas and the entire coaching staff are congratulated for putting together a formidable team that is mainly underclassmen.

Our Tennis Team traveled to San Antonio for the Regional Tournament, and returned with three qualifiers to the State Tournament. Jose Gonzalez and Two Ton Tony qualified as a doubles team and Jerome Higthens qualified in singles. Good Luck at State, serve and charge the net.

The Golf team is preparing for the upcoming Regional Tournament at San Antonio’s Silverthorn Golf Club. Austin Albers, Elias Franco, Juan Carlos Sapien, Mark Briggs and Sergio Molina will represent the Irish in San Antonio and hopefully on to the State Tournament.

Meet, Eat and Greet is the invitation extended to all prospective new students to Cathedral. Congratulations to Mr. Mario Vasquez for the tremendous effort in putting together this annual event. No one could have done it better!!! Jacob Estrada is still exhaling smoke from two days of grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for the throng. Our visitors feasted on good old fashioned Irish hospitality as they toured the school and met our faculty and administration. Every class, curriculum, club and sport was represented in the Saturday event and parents took the occasion to introduce their sons to teachers and coaches. The message was loud and clear,

Welcome to Cathedral High School.

“Once again...welcome to my house. Come freely. Go safely; and leave something of the happiness you bring.”
