Joshua Garcia ’11

During my freshmen and sophomore years at Cathedral, I actively participated in football. In my junior and senior years of high school, I was a part of the Irish Rugby team. I was also a part of the Irish for Mary club all four years of high school. I started off as a member, then got voted in as Vice President during my sophomore year, and finally to President during my junior year.

My parents and I decided to pursue my high school career at Cathedral High School because we wanted something for me that had a foundation for me with my Catholic faith. Ever since the visit that I took for 8th grade to Cathedral High, I was very impressed with the staff and faculty that made the environment feel very welcoming as we went visiting the different classes as well as getting a tour of the school. My parents always believed that my brother and I should receive a Catholic school education ever since elementary school.

I miss the brotherhood that we all shared as one under one roof, everything from the pep rallies to spirit days during Homecoming Week. The best memories that I have from Cathedral is attending football games and being a part of the Irish Zoo. The zoo is the one thing that I miss about my Friday nights. After that came the football and rugby games on the weekend. Because of playing football, I got interested in refereeing football starting my junior year.

After Cathedral I continued and finished my Associate’s degree at El Paso Community College. From there I continued my education at UTEP, pursing my Bachelor’s Degree in Forensic Science in May 2015. I plan to apply to graduate school and pursue my Masters in Chemistry as well as get a job in a related field dealing with Chemistry or Forensic Science.

My current job is a Customer Service Representative at the Texas Department of Public Safety. My current city of residence is in El Paso, TX. Cathedral taught me how to act in a professional manner in the workplace as well as providing customer service to all, and if needed, to go above and beyond what the normal representative would provide, which might be just the bare minimum in some cases, and that is something that I do not settle for.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am most proud of graduating from Cathedral High School with a great group of brothers who I know will be there for me whenever I may need them in my time of need. There were many individuals at Cathedral that helped inspire me and always told me that I should strive for the best.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
The lessons that I carry with me from Cathedral are that everything should be taken one day at a time and never lose faith. Lots of times things are taken for granted in life. You never know what might happen in the near future. Cathedral is your family away from home, always looking out for one another.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
The one lesson that I carry with me is that all people should be respected and treated equally, despite their differences.
