Joshua Morris ’11

I dabbled in a bit of everything while at Cathedral before graduating in 2011. I played basketball, debated, participated in the National Honor Society, and graduated with my Associate’s degree before moving on to study physics at The University of Texas at El Paso with a Bachelor’s in 2014 and a Master’s in 2015. I have the privilege to teach EA Physics at Cathedral while I’m applying to medical school.

My parents wanted me to get more out of my high school experience than just a diploma; they wanted something more for me that was missing from public schools. I felt an immediate connection with the dozens of layers of paint in the third floor classrooms, the statue of de la Salle overlooking the entrance, and the strange charm of the wooden floors in the Old Gym. My parents saw the opportunities that I would have to grow as both a person and a student at Cathedral, and we all knew it was the best and most natural fit for me.

The most cherished memories I have of Cathedral are interlaced with those from the year I taught an advanced physics class. As fantastic and fun as it was to live through the pep rallies and building a brotherhood with those who I shared nearly all my classes with, it was even better to watch my students experience it just as I had.

“What are you proudest of?”
My opportunities to give back to Cathedral by teaching there. It’s truly an indescribable experience to be on both sides of the student-teacher relationship and I will always treasure the times I was able to see things from both the student’s point of view, and the alumni teacher’s point of view.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
Never give up on being the best person you can be. Cathedral was a such a personal community that there was always someone to hold me to a higher standard and always someone there help pick me up when I fell short of living out the values Cathedral instilled in me.

Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Keep being the best that you can be. You’re all in this together, and I hope that you and your classmates can help set each other straight when you someone needs it, but never forget to help each other up when someone falls down.
