Alejandro Cuaron ’12

I graduated in 2012. During my Cathedral years I was on the swimming team all 4 years, qualifying for and winning the state championship each of those years with my fellow teammates. I was President of Student Council my senior year, and a member of National Honor Society.

What really drew me in was the high caliber swim team Cathedral had, upholding tradition for more than 20 years and their high academic standards. My uncles had also gone to Cathedral as well as both my grandfathers, so following family tradition was a must. My parents had decided to enroll me in Cathedral High School, mainly for my faith which today I cannot thank them enough for investing so much in a vital part in my life. Cathedral taught me how to be a gentleman and a scholar while having my faith as my core belief.

My most cherished moment was when #1 Faith Christian played us #2 Cathedral at home in basketball my senior year. It was a tough matchup between two very good teams. The Zoo was alive and there wasn’t a single soul in those stands that wasn’t cheering for Cathedral. In the end, Cathedral came out on top and we were able to take the #1 spot in the city like we deserved. Moments like those made me realize that the brotherhood is more than sharing a classroom, it’s about sharing beliefs, struggles, and success beyond graduation.

Currently I am in my last semester at the University of Texas at El Paso studying Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. At UTEP, I do research on 3D printers at the W.M. Keck Center for 3D Innovation, the most prestigious collegiate 3D printing lab in the nation. At the Keck Center, I am part of a multi-disciplinary team working on a $2.2 million grant from America Makes, a government funded group, to assemble a multi-material multi-technology system to create 3D printed parts with integrated electronics. Even working, I have been able to remain a member of Alpha Sigma Mu, which is the Honor Society for Materials Science at UTEP.

Being in my last semester at UTEP I was able to get a job with Halliburton. I am moving to Duncan, Oklahoma in June to begin my career as a Metallurgical and Materials Engineer at the age of 21.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am proud to be part of a school who molded me to be a man, where I learned to take care of my responsibilities and learned that nothing is given, it is earned.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
A lesson I will always remember, told to me by Brother Nick, “Always remember where you came from”.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Enjoy Cathedral because there is no place like it. There are so many opportunities for success there and its only a matter of reaching out to get them. he faculty and staff are all there for one reason, to educate young men. It is a privilege to go to Cathedral and an honor to be in the brotherhood and once you leave “Always remember where you came from”. Study hard! Viva la Cate!
