Julian De La Paz ’11

My name is Julian De La Paz, and I am a proud member of the Cathedral High School graduating Class of 2011. I can distinctly remember my first time entering the building, spellbound by the words, “Enter to Learn. Leave to Serve.” My mother, who orchestrated my initial visit to Cathedral, had always told me of the schools rich history, tradition of excellence, and superior education bestowed upon its students.

Within my first few weeks as a student, I could accurately attest to all of this and more, including the superb quality of teachers and tremendous sense of brotherhood among the boys. I was actively involved in an array of activities during my four years at Cathedral High School, but my most cherished memories include my four years on the Speech & Debate Team, my role as the Freshman and Junior Class President, National Honor Society, Chivalry Club, Irish 30 , and graduating with my Associates Degree days before my high school graduation.

After Cathedral, I attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and graduated from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, with a degree in Culture and Politics and a concentration in Media, Communications, and Culture. While at Georgetown, I was a Gates Millennium Scholar, 1789 Scholar, and T. Howard Foundation Scholar. As a student, I was actively involved in WGTB Georgetown Radio, the Georgetown Program Board, the Georgetown Scholarship Program, and Georgetown Stories as a video and photo blogger for the Office of Communications and Advancement.

I currently reside in New York City, where I work at 30 Rock as an NBC Universal East Coast Page. In my spare time, I serve as Co-Chair of the Georgetown University 2015 Alumni Class Committee and Co-President of the Georgetown University Class of 2015 Book Club.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am most proud of graduating from Georgetown University and the opportunity to begin my career in media/entertainment with NBC Universal as a member of the prestigious Page Program.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
The importance of mentorship. One of my most rewarding experiences as a student was having Mrs. Terry Peevey as a dear teacher, mentor, and friend. Throughout my four years at Cathedral, she taught me how to think outside the box and challenged my critical thinking skills on a daily basis. Five years after high school graduation, I still maintain contact with Mrs. Peevey, and she continues to nourish my life with wisdom, sage counsel, and above all, friendship. My experience at Cathedral wouldn’t have been the same without her.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) or a current Cathedral student?”
Always be inquisitive, read something every day, get involved with student organizations, say “yes” to new experiences, and never stop learning. You are blessed to be at such an incredible institution, so cherish every moment and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
