John Aguilar ’06

I graduated from Cathedral in 2006. During my time at La Cate I was involved in basketball my first two years and the golf team all four years. My parents decided to send me to Cathedral High School because of its strong academic reputation, and because several family members, including my brother (class of ’03), attended La Cate. I was not keen on attending Cathedral initially, since it was all guys and naturally as a teenager preferred a co-ed atmosphere. However, after the first couple weeks at Cathedral, I came to appreciate the strong sense of brotherhood and how the teachers treated you as adults but with that also came great responsibility.

One of my most cherished memories while at Cathedral were the basketball games, and the infamous zoo cheering on the team. It is the only time that I have experienced literally every single student cheering on a team, and it didn’t matter who we were playing against, the zoo was a force to be reckoned with. One lesson that has stuck with me from Cathedral is the importance of helping others. Along my academic and career path, I have been fortunate to have great role models and mentors, and always look for an opportunity to pave the way for the next generation.

After Cathedral, I attended Boston University and graduated in 2010 with a BA in International Relations. After Boston, I came to Washington, DC to work for Congressman Silvestre Reyes for three years, then the National Hispanic Medical Association for two years. I currently work as a healthcare consultant for APCO Worldwide. In addition, I will be completing a Masters in Public Policy from George Mason University this summer.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am proudest of the friendships I made during my time at Cathedral. To this day, the Cate brothers are some of my best friends, and I know that we’ll continue the friendship throughout our lifetimes.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
One of the lessons I learned while at Cathedral is to never be afraid to challenge yourself. You will never know your true potential if you do not challenge yourself, and the teachers and staff at Cathedral have done a great job of pushing each student to be the best version of themselves, which translates into success and new opportunities.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
Cathedral offers a unique brotherhood that you will not experience anywhere else. Be sure to cherish the relationships with your brothers, and treat them with same respect as they are now your second family.
