Efren Lemus ’11

I graduated from Cathedral as a member of the Class of 2011. Enrolling at Cathedral was never a question for me. Through my older brother and several other cousins who had attended Cathedral before me, my parents and I knew that it was the best place for me to grow both in mind and spirit.

At Cathedral I was a member of the baseball team, the French Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. Moreover, as a part of the Dual Credit Program, I was able to receive an Associates of Arts degree from EPCC simultaneously with my high school diploma.

During my senior year, I was awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which allowed me to attend any college or institution of my choice on a full scholarship. I attended Georgetown University where I graduated as a member of the Class of 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with minors in Government and Theology.

Currently, I am a first year law student at the SMU Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas, after which I hope to pursue a career in corporate law. The lessons I learned inside the classroom at Cathedral have been unquestionably vital at every stage of my academic career. However, even more important were the lessons I learned through my peers, my teachers, and the staff of Cathedral about the importance of friendship, community, and treating every individual with dignity and respect.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am most proud to be a part of a strong family legacy of Cathedral graduates. A total of six members of my family, including my older brother, have graduated from Cathedral, and my youngest brother is currently enrolled as a junior. From my oldest cousin to attend Cathedral, Carlos Corral (Class of 2002) to my brother, Luis Lemus (Class of 2017), Cathedral unites us in one common bond of brotherhood and tradition.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
The most valuable lesson I learned while at Cathedral and one that continues to resonate with me in everything that I do, is that our circumstances are not determinative of our success. There are always opportunities to succeed so long as you are willing to seize them through hard work and an eagerness to improve your situation.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
As some of my classmates and I were reflecting on our time at Cathedral during one of our final religion classes before graduation someone said,”Our parents not only pay for an education, they also pay for an experience.” I cannot think of a better way to describe what Cathedral meant to me. I would tell any current student to take full advantage of the unique experience that is spending four years in the halls of Cathedral High School. You will be hard-pressed to spend another four years of your life surrounded by such interesting, caring, and intelligent individuals from your fellow classmates to the janitors, teachers, and administrators.
