Dustin Luse ’10

I graduated class of 2010 and was a member of the swim team, editor for the school newspaper, and senior class vice president. With the support of my parents, I chose to attend Cathedral for the dual-credit college preparation program and nationally-ranked swim team.

My most cherished memories from La Cate are the times I spent with my swim team training, joking and celebrating our victories in and out of the pool. Most teens shudder at the thought of waking up at 5 a.m. to jump in a cold pool, but knowing I would spend the morning laughing and racing with my Cathedral brothers always pulled me from my bed with a smile on my face.

Not only was Cathedral a source of infinite fun and friendship during my time there, the dual-credit program provided me with over thirty hours of college credit that transferred to Baylor University, allowing me to graduate in four years, class of 2014, with a double major in economics and business administration and a minor in biochemistry.

I am now a medical student pursuing a career in surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and I am grateful for the work ethic, sense of service and intellectual curiosity that was instilled in me during my years at Cathedral.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am proudest of my faith in Jesus Christ and the purpose He has for me in life.

“What lessons from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
Cathedral taught me the importance of treating everyone as if they were a member of my family. I think the experience at Cathedral was unique compared to other schools in that its all-boys with a small class size so you get to know everyone, even the people who are different from you. You get the sense that everyone is family and you look out for each other. This mentality has carried over into the way I interact with patients and will continue to be a part of the doctor-patient relationships I build throughout my career.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
My advice to current students is to love God, embrace beauty, and live life to the fullest.
