I am a proud graduate of the class of 2010. While attending Cathedral High School I was active in the debate team, mock trial team, drama club, as well as being Vice President of the Thespian Honor Society, and President of the Art Honor Society.
After graduating from St. Patrick’s Cathedral School, I chose to attend Cathedral High School over a public high school because my father was a graduate of the class of 1975 and regularly took me to Irish football games and tamaladas which cemented the foundation of faith through brotherhood.
This legacy of brotherhood and the friendships I made during my education at Cathedral is what I miss most about my time in high school. The international and intercultural camaraderie formed at Cathedral is one that no other high school can boast to having. Notably, through Cathedral High School, I received the opportunity to travel abroad twice; to Ireland and the United Kingdom during my sophomore year, and Greece and Italy my senior year. These educational tours of Europe with my Cathedral brothers and family members created a lasting impression of my place in the world as a global citizen as well as providing a significant cultural education that was tangible and truly unique to my high school experience.
Upon my graduation, I was accepted to New Mexico State University’s Creative Media Institute which I attended for two years before being offered a scholarship and transferring to the University of New Mexico’s College of Fine Arts, where I graduated with my Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Media Arts in the summer of 2014.
While at UNM, I was recruited to be a student employee with New Mexico PBS KNME-TV in Albuquerque, NM. I have worked in the production department as a member of the student studio production crew and a field videographer, and am currently employed as the youngest broadcaster within the operations department of the station where I manage media and over-the-air programming for our four local channels.
If it had not been for the various video projects I produced as a high school student, most notably a rap music video about climate change, as well as having the support and motivation of many teachers and staff, I don’t think I would have found my niche in television broadcasting and succeeded thus far.
I truly believe the values of respect, dedication, and education which were honed while at Cathedral opened the door for my current career endeavors, especially in today’s world where those values seem to have been forgotten by so many.
“What are you proudest of?”
I am proudest of the fact that since graduating from Cathedral, the moments which bring me pride continue to increase in my life due to the fact that I was molded into the gentleman I am today while in high school. The bar at Cathedral was truly set high and I feel like motivation and a strong work ethic are traits that I developed at Cathedral which prepared me for the challenges of a higher education and the career path I pursued.
“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
There is always a bigger plan than what you might be aware of presently in life. The Lord works in mysterious ways and I believe that my spiritual foundation at Cathedral has allowed me to fully put my trust in God’s hands while still pushing myself to succeed through hard work and utilizing talents I have been blessed with.
“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
I would encourage Cathedral students who are interested in the arts like I am to follow their passions and interests while being involved in high school, much like I did, through classes and extracurricular activities. Be curious of the world around you and use critical thinking skills to open avenues in your life which will better suit you and your talents. Not only are you developing your own artistic style but also opening the door to various opportunities while in high school.
