Jonathan Brower ’07

I graduated from Cathedral in 2007 where I played on the varsity tennis team for all four years of school and was involved in Student Council and the National Honor Society. My parents originally chose for me to go to Cathedral because they felt it gave me the best opportunity to grow as a student and, more importantly, as a man. They saw a need for me to be challenged in my education, and Cathedral provided the best opportunity for that, especially within the context of more personal and intimate classroom setting.

My most cherished moments come from the group of brothers that I grew up with over the course of four years. These brothers challenged me, competed with me, encouraged me, stood up for me, and most importantly cared for me in a way that shaped the way I approach friendships, professional life, and fellowship today. The atmosphere of brotherhood that permeates the halls of Cathedral is something that I will never forget.

Upon graduating from Cathedral, I attended Texas A&M University in College Station where I earned a a bachelor’s degree in December of 2010 and a master’s degree in civil engineering in May of 2012. I now work as a structural engineer in Dallas for L.A. Fuess Partners, where I collaborate with architects and contractors to design and construct buildings across DFW, the state of Texas, and even some out of state projects. I also serve as the Technical Director for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Dallas Branch, where I have the opportunity to give back to my engineering profession through mentorship of high school students and fellowship with other civil engineers.

The leadership skills, professional skills, and appreciation for lifelong learning that I developed at Cathedral gave me the backbone I needed succeed today in my career.

“What are you proudest of?”
I am proudest of the fact that I am now in a position to mentor, teach, and lead others. There are numerous individuals throughout my high school, college, and professional career who have had a positive impact on me and have taught me the importance of respect, loyalty, integrity, excellence, leadership, and selfless service. I am continually humbled and cognizant of the fact that I can now pass down these same values to others, and I couldn’t be more excited and eager to do so.

“What lesson from Cathedral do you carry with you?”
I always carry with me the lesson of character. I don’t remember who it was exactly, but I remember being told several times during my freshman year at Cathedral that “character is who you are when nobody is watching.” Whether I’m training for a marathon, working late at the office on a project deadline, or simply pursuing and maintaining a friendship or relationship with someone, this lesson always resonates with me.

“Do you have a message (lesson/observation) for a current Cathedral student?”
I would recommend that you cherish every moment of your time in those halls. You will never have another opportunity to grow, mature, and learn with a group of brothers every day for four years ever again. It truly is a remarkable and special place you are at right now and I would encourage you to appreciate that. Also, never forget that Jesus is Lord. At the end of the day, we are all just frail, mortal man, and we need to always call on the name of The Lord and take Him as our life.
